That New “Sucker Punch” Trailer Is Bananas

Zack Snyder has cranked up the "Sucker Punch" publicity machine with the first trailer for his "'Alice in Wonderland' with machine guns" extravaganza.

The official synopsis isn't terribly helpful, but just for laughs, here it is:

“Sucker Punch” is an epic action fantasy that takes us into the vivid imagination of a young girl whose dream world provides the ultimate escape from her darker reality. Unrestrained by the boundaries of time and place, she is free to go where her mind takes her, but her incredible adventures blur the lines between what’s real and what is imaginary…with potentially tragic consequences.

The film stars Emily Browning as Baby Doll, a young woman in the 1950s whose evil stepfather has her institutionalized and scheduled for a lobotomy. As near as we can tell, Baby Doll retreats into a fantasy word where she hones the skills she'll need to make a real-world escape.

Joining Browning in her adventures are Abbie Cornish, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Jena Malone and Carla Gugino, whose characters were all introduced via posters that were released on line during Comic-Con.

Snyder ("300," "Watchmen") has established himself as a director with a distinct eye, but "Sucker Punch" is his first attempt at bringing an original story of his own to life. The clip is 86 seconds of WW II, "Moulin Rouge!," "Kill Bill," "Brazil" and a host of other elements coming together to form a gleaming ball of pure eye candy.

"Sucker Punch" hits theaters March 25, 2011.
