"Zombieland" came out of nowhere to be the sleeper hit of 2009. raking in more than $100 million globally, and helping to launch the careers of director Ruben Fleischer and Emma Stone. Since then, there's been on-and-off chatter about a sequel, but that now seems unlikely.
Fox and Sony Pictures Television are in talks with original "Zombieland" scribes, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, to develop to the zombie sitcom for the 2012 TV season, repored Vulture. This makes a certain kind of sense in as much as "Zombieland" was originally developed as a TV series
"We always thought [it should be a TV series]," Reese told MTV in 2010. "If you watch the movie with that in mind, you will see some remnants of the television show. We have the 'Zombie Kill of the Week,' which was always intended to happen every week. The movie ends on a cliffhanger; it doesn't have a real resolution."
This move to TV is really for the best, as Fleischer and the cast never really seemed excited about the idea of going back to "Zombieland." Earlier this year Fleischer was as diplomatic as could be in discussing the possibility.
“[Rhett and Paul] wrote something and it was really great,” Fleischer told The Playlist. “A script exists. We all are excited of the prospect of making the movie, but I guess we all haven’t found the perfect story to tell yet.”
It's not as though any of the principals involved are hurting for work, as Fleischer is currently shooting "Gangster Squad" with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson can next be seen in Oren Moverman's "Rampart," Abigail Breslin will be flashing her bra Dec. 9 in "New Year's Eve," Amber Heard can be seen mackin' with Johnny Depp Oct. 28 in "The Rum Diary" and Jesse Eisenberg this summer filmed the upcoming Woody Allen film "Bop Decameron."
