Google is Using Gmail to Brainwash You

For those who empty their Web email quickly and methodically (unlike me who has email dating from 2004) you might recall that Gmail would write, "No new mail! There's always Google News if you're looking for something to read."

Later that was changed to Google Reader, but now Gmail is subtly pushing its users to Google+, according to the Google Operating System blog. "No new mail! See what people are talking about on Google+." It also has a link to "What's Hot" on Google+, which features popular photos, video and posts. While some lament this as the end of Google Reader (and it is) others aren't so sad.

So in essence, Google has attempted to brainwash us all into using its products, but is it working? Compete says it's a success, with about half the users and views of Twitter in only about six months, and we previously reported that Ancestry.com founder and kooky statistics guy Paul Allen projected more than 290 million users this year.

So, if you feel compelled to check out Google+ after briefly checking Gmail -- know that you are not alone.
