Where Whitman's Charity Spends Its Money

Does Meg Whitman, one of the richest people in the world, really need charity?

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Whitman's charitable foundation spent the bulk of its funds to protect land adjacent to the family's sprawling compound in Colorado.

Whitman's Telluride condo and ranch sound like a lovely place to kick back and relax, thanks in part to over a $1 million that her charity spent on preserving the area. The donation was part of a $50 million campaign to keep out new condo development.

The Whitman estate is estimated at around $5 million for the condo, $18 million for the ranch, and $16 million for property around a mountain lake. And the family will continue to enjoy the view, now that they've successfully kept out any encroaching developers.

In contrast, Whitman and her billionaire husband gave just $5,000 to her Presbytarian church here in California. Whitman has often cited her religion as her motivation for fighting against civil rights.

The family also donated $30 million to Princeton, but they've got a horse in that race as well. Whitman's son Will currently attends the school. Recently, Will caused a bit of a kerfuffle when he stormed into the middle of a Princeton softball game and claimed that the field belonged to him.
