'40s-Style Swing Night in Anaheim

Take a lesson, then dance downtown during a lively community event.

SUMMER'S SWEET SWAN SONG: The second half of August, while typically one of the toastiest, turn-up-the-fan-iest times of year, is also the end of the traditional "easy" season. Labor Day is on the near horizon, and, with it, the start of school, and the return to a more buckle-down schedule for many. Thus doing something a bit free, and a bit easy, and a bit under-the-stars, becomes paramount for many people. If that can involve dancing in the center of town, a rare and whimsical pursuit, so much the better. That's just the lively doing that will capture the heart of downtown Anaheim on Saturday, Aug. 13, which is, pretty much, the eve of August's latter half. 18TH ANNUAL SWINGIN' ON THE PROMENADE, and Atomic Ballroom Irvine will be out early in the evening, teaching beginners swing steps (and helping seasoned dancers polish up, if that's their preference). Jonathan Stout and His Campus Five, featuring Hilary Alexander are on the stage, as is DJ Vintage Pete. It's a bucket of good-time-having, one that flows alongside the Anaheim Art Crawl. And the folks behind the Anaheim Fall Festival & Halloween Parade will be out at the beer and wine garden, should you need a libation to help your dancing self cool down between ditties. The presence of the fall fest peeps should remind us all that summer is wrapping up soon, and dancing outside, at night, during an art crawl, is an opportunity best seized while the August is ripe.
