Cider Summit: Bay Area Beverage Bash

The Presidio's the place to try a line-up of deep-toned, fruit-forward brews.

TRAVELING TASTES: As spring approaches, so do the announcements involving the many on-the-road culinary events that seem to (delightfully) crowd the calendar when the weather warms up. There are those to-dos highlighting local wines, and California beers, and one that has a bit of an autumn zing to it, if you associated apples and deep-toned brews and hard ciders with the fall. But you won't need to wait for September to try a number of sips from a host of cider-making specialists: Cider Summit SF will pull into The Presidio on April 22. That's a Saturday, so booking a nearby overnight, or finding a friend near the beautiful, Golden Gate Bridge-close expanse is a solid and safe idea (the summit also offers designated driver admissions, too). Cider lovers, take note that this is the...

ONLY GOLDEN STATE STOP... for the cider-focused festival, which will make for Portland, Seattle, and Chicago in the months following San Francisco. You can expect to see/taste "Artisanal Ciders From Around the World" at The Presidio's Civil War Parade Ground, including "over 150 ciders" from near and far across the globe. Who'll be there? Bunches of ciderists serving up brews as well as apple-y cocktails. A Fruit Cider Challenge will be afoot, too. As for the labels? You can bet Ace Cider will be in the house, and Cider Brothers, and Golden State Cider, too, as well as Tilted Shed Ciderworks and Sonoma Cider. Also, look for a limited-edition cider from Finnriver Farm & Cidery to make a cameo. Whole Foods is presented the weekend-long affair, and there shall be eats, so plan on noshing. And plan on helping a number of local organizations with part of your ticket price, including The Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research and Berkeley Humane.
