Monterey Jazz Festival Goes on the Road

The celebrated music festival spends a day in Orange County.

FAMOUS SOUNDS: A city's name should always stand on its own, but that is rarely the case when it comes to some of our stand-out towns around the state. Monterey is a bit of a doozy in this respect; say the word and "Bay Aquarium" often pops into the thoughts next, or, just as likely, "Jazz Festival." Those are some excellent words to follow an excellent city's name, but it goes to show that an event has to have been around for awhile to merit that status. The aquarium certainly has, and the jazz fest, too, which marked 55 years in 2012. It's not do for another nine or so months -- it's an autumntime tradition -- but that doesn't mean you can't get a taste now, and you don't have to go far from home to do it (that is, if you're in Southern California). Monterey Jazz is on the road, and visiting the Segerstrom Center for the Arts on Sunday, Jan. 13.

AND THERE'S ANOTHER SIGN... That you've become quite important in your specific field: When you're big enough to take it out of the city you're named for. It's just a one-day thing in Costa Mesa, not a multiple day affair like in Monterey, but the music stars will be out in full-force. Look for the amazing Dee Dee Bridgewater, Christian McBride, Ambrose Akinmusire, Benny Green, Lewis Nash, and Chris Potter. It's a serious line-up for serious music lovers, especially those who can't wait for over a half-year for the next go-around. Which leads us to suggesting that all high-profile music events tied to a specific place should head out on the road at the half-year mark. Give the fans elsewhere a treat, and keep the anticipation high for the main event.
