Not a Guest? No Problem

THAT CERTAIN PHRASE... Is so necessary and yet. And yet. Surely you know the phrase of which we speak? No? It's the one often heard at a hotel and it goes along the lines of "and are you staying with us?" (A variant: "What may I put as your room number?") In short, hotel guests have privileges, which is right and good. And yet. Sometimes you want to enjoy aspects of an inn without checking in. Sometimes you want to sit in a cabana on an October evening and share a cocktail with your pals. And, this fall, you can do just that at The Peninsula Beverly Hills. For the first time, The Peninsula will be opening up its oh-so-famous poolside cabanas to people not staying at the hotel.

HOW IT WORKS: The cabanas -- there are a dozen of 'em -- will be open to non-guests from 5 through 9 p.m. every night through Dec. 15. There will be a cocktail menu, and a small bites thing going as well. (The examples, or exaMMMples, rather: White Peach and Pear Martini, Pomegranate Mojito, a lemon-braised Hearts of Palm Salad. Mmm indeed.) Prices? Sixteen dollars for drinks, same range-ish for plates (they'll run up to $20). There's a drink/eats minimum for 6-and-under parties -- it's $195 -- so best discuss with your group before making for Beverly Hills. Make it celebratory, we say, and feel cabana-cool for a night.
