Solvang's Scarecrows

UNSCARED CROWS: Have you been to a fall festival this year? If you have you've likely seen that jaunty-capped symbol of the season, the scarecrow. We just saw one at a pumpkin festival. The flannel-and-hay figure had a -- wait for it -- live crow on its shoulder. Did that crow not know the rules? That it should be too scared to even approach the hay man? Sigh. We figure the bird got so friendly with the figure because it knows what we all know: scarecrows are kind of cute. They can be found on countless greeting cards and home decor items this time of year. And most people erect scarecrows not to scare crows but to delight and charm non-scarecrow people. Such is the case in Solvang, which is celebrating its 2nd Annual Scarecrow Fest through Nov. 16. Scarecrows are dotting the town and visitors have a chance to vote on various categories -- Most Traditional, Most Humorous -- through Nov. 12.

ALSO IN SOLVANG: If you happen to be wandering around the windmill-y village over Halloween weekend, note that the 18th Annual Halloween Haunted House at Solvang Festival Theater gets creepy from Oct. 29 through the 31st. Boo!
