Worth the Drive: Santa Barbara Harbor & Seafood Festival

Worth the Drive is NBCLA's twice weekly look at nearby getaways

Your job: Decide to get out of town and fast. Our job: Help you find where you're headed. This week, NBCLA's Worth the Drive takes us to...

The Santa Barbara Harbor & Seafood Festival: It's all hands on deck for this breezy bash. Meaning? The city of Santa Barbara, as well as local fishermen, businesspeople, and the Maritime Museum, are all behind the bibs, tongs, and sunshine spectacular.

The American Riviera: You know this is Santa Barbara's sweetly frou-frou but highly accurate nickname. And the town's sparkly harbor has much to do with its oft-repeated moniker. The bobbing boats, the lobster restaurants, the pier. Postcardishness to the max.

Why the festival has "seafood" in its name: There's a whole special day-of menu that boasts ocean-y favorites like barbecued albacore, chowders, and bisques. Bisques! We would have a bisque a day, if we could only organize our life around pursuing that goal.

In addition to bisque consumption, you can... Watch a cooking demo. Go on a boat cruise. Meet the people who venture out on the boats, daily, to catch the fish that go into the bisques. And you'll want to listen to the live bands during your brief bisque-sipping breaks.

Time/date/dollars: 10AM-5PM, Saturday, October 10th, Santa Barbara Harbor. Admission is free. Eating/activities are extra.

Also that day... The Seaside Games are lobbing hammers and cabers at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. We've raved about this setting before. Can you do both the Santa Barbara fest and the Seaside Games in one big loop? If you get your rest and plan. But, good news: The Seaside Games happen both October 10th and 11th. Saturday in Santa Barbara, Sunday in Ventura. Done.
