NBC4 and Telemundo 52 Los Angeles announce the return of the award-winning pet adoption campaign Clear the Shelters.™ Launching now and culminating on Saturday, August 17, the stations’ fifth annual adoption drive includes participation of more than 75 local shelters and rescue locations throughout the Southland. On August 17, participating groups will offer a reduced adoption fee of $20.

"Since we launched Clear the Shelters five years ago, the adoption drive’s unprecedented success has become an integral part of the community every year," said NBC4 President and General Manager Steve Carlston.  "NBC4 looks forward to continuing the tradition of helping alleviate the animal overpopulation at shelters and offering affordable adoptions to all our viewers."

"Every year, it is amazing to see thousands of people throughout Southern California mobilize to help Clear the Shelters," said Celia Chavez, President and General Manager, Telemundo 52 Los Angeles. "We look forward to another successful year and helping thousands of animals find their forever home."

Last year’s Clear the Shelters™ resulted in nearly 17,000 pet adoptions across five counties in Southern California with all types of animals finding forever homes – from guinea pigs to rabbits to dogs and cats. This year is no exception with cat cafés and a wide range of reptiles up for adoption at a reduced fee.

Both stations will feature many animal-related stories and raise awareness about shelters inflicted with severe crowdedness and the importance of adopting a pet. On August 17, the stations will broadcast live throughout the day from several shelters beginning at 7 a.m. with NBC4’s Today in LA morning news and highlights on the station’s 5, 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts. KVEA’s Noticiero Telemundo 52 will also recap the day’s success at 6 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Local sponsor VCA Animal Hospitals’ health teams will also be at shelters to offer a certificate for a free first exam and a limited health guarantee to ensure a healthy start.

"We believe every pet deserves a happy life, and that includes receiving proper medical care. Our support for Clear the Shelters has been in place for five years and the shelters we partner with help to ensure that every pet adopted gets a chance to see a veterinarian, and all the care needed so they can thrive in their new home with their family," said Brandon Antin, VCA Animal Hospital’s VP of Social Responsibility & Innovation.
