NBC4 Southern California has teamed with the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) on a Digital Media Fellowship, it was announced today by Sara Catania, editorial director of NBCLA.com.

An AAJA member, Hetty Chang is the first fellowship recipient through a pilot program with KNBC.  Under the fellowship, Chang will receive hands-on digital training from seasoned NBCLA.com news professionals, working in a fast-paced, challenging newsroom environment.  She will report to Catania and work with the NBCLA.com team to write, edit and report on the station’s website as well as honing her social media skills on Twitter and Facebook.

“Hetty possesses the ideal combination of reporting expertise and new media enthusiasm,” Catania said. “We’re thrilled to have her join the NBC4 web team for this fellowship.”

An Emmy-nominated reporter, Chang was most recently a reporter for KSNV-TV, an NBC affiliate in Las Vegas, Nevada since 2007.  During her tenure at the station, she covered the OJ Simpson Trial and conducted one of Barack Obama’s last interviews before becoming President of the United States.  She also covered the state legislature.

Prior to KSNV, Chang was a reporter and fill-in anchor for KRNV, the NBC affiliate in Reno, Nevada.  Chang began her career as a program coordinator for Red Herring, a business technology online magazine.  After that, she was a freelance reporter and host for IBM Partnerworld, where she conducted interviews with corporate executives and business leaders  in Mandarin and Spanish.  Chang, who is an LA native, also served as reporter/producer for LA Cityview, Channel 35 in Los Angeles.

“This is a terrific opportunity for one of our members to work with some of the industry’s top news professionals.  New media is an important part of journalism today and productive way for a member to be part the busiest and very respected newsrooms in the country,” said Ky Trang Ho, president of AAJA, Los Angeles.
