Jack Ryan Reboot Gets 2013 Release Date

Chris Pine, Keira Knightley and Kenneth Branagh on deck for CIA analyst prequel.

One of 2013's most anticipated action-thrillers has been given a tentative release date. The as-yet-untitled Jack Ryan movie - the first of an anticipated franchise trilogy - will be released in the fourth quarter of next year, according to Deadline.

Ryan's latest incarnation will arrive in the form of Chris Pine, already a franchise-reboot favorite thanks to his portrayal of Captain James T. Kirk in J.J. Abrams' 2009 relaunch of "Star Trek" on the big screen. Pine has long been locked in to play the CIA analyst and the announcement of a release period for the movie means that the actor will star in two of 2013's biggest releases: the new Jack Ryan flick and Abram's "Star Trek " follow-up (with Pine back on the Enterprise bridge as Kirk), which is currently in post-production and set for a May 17 debut.

So keen for Pine to fill Ryan's shoes, Paramount Pictures waited for the actor to complete the second "Star Trek" installment before pushing ahead with the film, reports Deadline.

The prequel will pick up Ryan before he joins the agency, and if audience reaction is positive, two more installments would further flesh out the character's early years.

Along with Pine, Kenneth Branagh has signed on to direct the film as well as star as a Russian villain plotting to bring down the U.S. economy. Keira Knightley will portray Ryan's love interest - a role played by Anne Archer in the Harrison Ford films - and Kevin Costner rounds out the leading cast as CIA liaison officer William Harper, a role that could see the actor cross over into another proposed Tom Clancy adaptation  "Without Remorse." That film would focus on the character John Kelly who eventually becomes a CIA operative.

Branagh described the new Jack Ryan concept as “an original story that allows us to understand how Jack Ryan develops into a CIA analyst, before joining, and perhaps even joining, the CIA. It’s a very contemporary action thriller set in the here and now.”
