‘Shaken to My Core': Late-Night Hosts React to Trump Putin Fallout

The hosts’ remarks came after Trump said that he misspoke in Helsinki

Several late-night TV hosts on Tuesday reacted to President Donald Trump clarifying a remark he made Monday during a joint news conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Jimmy Kimmel applied the concept of Trump clarifying his previous remarks to the Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky scandal.

“This is like if Bill Clinton had come out and said, ‘Wait, no, I meant to say I did have sexual relations with that woman!” Kimmel said.

Stephen Colbert applied the concept to the general public.

“Who among us hasn’t said the exact opposite of what he just said in front of cameras on multiple occasions?” Colbert asked. “I’m sorry, let me clarify — that sentence should be, ‘Who among us has not not done that?’”

The hosts’ remarks came after Trump said that he misspoke in Helsinki. When asked Monday about U.S. intelligence officials’ findings that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election, Trump said he couldn’t figure why Russia “would” have been involved.

On Tuesday, Trump said he made a mistake and that he meant to say he couldn’t imagine why Russia “wouldn’t” have interfered in the election.

Hours after the news conference concluded in Finland on Monday, the late-night hosts responded to the Trump's remarks, calling them bizarre and detailing their amazement. Kimmel said Monday might have been the “weirdest” day of Trump’s presidency.

“Today has shaken me to my core — and I don’t need to point out that at 54 there’s not a lot of core left,” Colbert said.

“Putin did say that the meeting went very well. In fact, it went so well that Putin said he might make Trump president for another four years,” Fallon said.

Trevor Noah responded to Putin saying “you can trust no one” on Monday.

“On the list of people to never trust, Putin is between WebMD and the mom from ‘Get Out,’” Noah said.

Seth Myers on Monday commented on the Trump's relationship with Putin.

“Can someone get Trump a glass of water?” Meyers asked. “Cause he thirsty. It’s only a matter of weeks before he ‘Single White Females’ Putin.”

After the news conference, multiple TV networks critiqued the president, which prompted Fallon to joke, “Trump said he shouldn’t jump to any conclusions until we hear what Cartoon Network has to say.”
