Lil Wayne: I Didn't Step on the American Flag on Purpose!

The rapper is under fire for stepping on the Stars and Stripes while filming a music video.

Lil Wayne is on the defensive after some controversial footage surfaced online showing him stepping on the American flag.

The rapper took to Twitter and Facebook to explain that his walking all over the Stars and Stripes was accidental as he was concentrating on filming a music video for his new single, "God Bless Amerika."

"I didn't step on the flag on purpose! It's a scene in a video where the flag drops behind me and after it drop it's just there as I perform," Lil Wayne tweeted.

Despite guidelines under federal law stipulating that the flag should never touch the ground, Weezy elaborated further that he didn't mean to be disrespectful and even went so far as to suggest the clip making the rounds on the Internet was a "camera trick."

"It was never my intention to desecrate the flag of the United States of America," Wayne wrote on his Facebook wall. "The clip that surfaced on the Internet was a camera trick clip that revealed that behind the American Flag was the Hoods of America. In the final edit of the video you will see the flag fall to reveal what is behind it but will never see it on the ground."

While he still didn't directly address why the U.S. flag that was displayed behind him was handled as it was, the hip-hopster noted the aim of his music video is to portray the America that he says is often forgotten--like the neighborhood in New Orleans where he grew up.

"In most people eyes including my own who were raised in that environment, the Hood is the only America they know and the only America I knew growing up," he wrote. "I was fortunate from my God givin talents to escape the Hood and see the other beautiful places this country has to offer but most people who are born in that environment don't get that chance. That's their view of their America. That was Dwayne M Carter from Hollygrove New Orleans view of America. That's who I'm speaking for in this song."
