“The Voice” Recap: America Picks the Top 12

After two nights of knockout performances, the competition's 20 singers were narrowed down to the top 12.

Of all the songs performed on “The Voice” Wednesday night, perhaps the most appropriate was the number performed by Chris Jamison, a Season 8 finalist, and hip-hop star Wiz Khalifa. The duo opened the show with “See You Again,” which paved the way for a wrenching night of farewells as the coaches — and America’s vote — narrowed 20 singers in the competition to just 12.

Team Blake — Brooke Adee, Corey Kent White, Sarah Potenza, Hannah Kirby and Meghan Linsey — united on stage for one last group performance of “I’ll Take You There.”

America voted to save White, the competition’s only country artist, as well as Linsey. That left Kirby, Adee and Potenza on deck to head home.

With a heavy heart, coach Blake Shelton elected to save Kirby, who had earned raves from the coaches for her profound vocal ability and equally quirky dance moves.

Team Xtina joined together to perform a choral rendition of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” — but it was their last performance together, as only India Carney and Kimberly Nichole were voted to continue.

Coach Christina Aguilera then saved Rob Taylor, meaning Sonic and Lexi Dávila were heading home.

Team Pharrell joined forces to sing “Say Something,” a song that premiered on “The Voice” stage.

Teen heartthrob Sawyer Fredericks — the youngest singer in the competition — was the first to be saved in the voting. America also saved dynamic pop singer Mia Z. That left Caitlin Caporale, Koryn Hawthorne and Lowell Oakley.

“I want you to know this is the beginning of the rest of your lives,” a visibly emotional Pharrell Williams said. “But I’ve gotta go with my heart and my soul on this one, and that’s why I’m going to go with Koryn.”

Closing out the night was Team Adam, who sang Rihanna’s “Shine Bright Like a Diamond.”

America voted to save Joshua Davis and Deanna Johnson. And with episode’s remaining seconds, Levine picked a (surprised-looking) Brian Johnson, meaning that Nathan Hermida and Tonya Boyd-Cannon would head home.

Heading into next week, here are the top 12:

Team Blake: Hannah Kirby, Meghan Linsey and Corey Kent White
Team XTina: India Carney, Kimberley Nichole and Rob Taylor
Team Pharrell: Sawyer Fredericks, Koryn Hawthorne and Mia Z
Team Adam: Joshua Davis, Brian Johnson and Deanna Johnson.

“The Voice” returns Monday, April 13 with special guest coach Reba McEntire.
