Springsteen Documentary Revealed

Boss fans have more to look forward to this fall than just the re-issued deluxe version of Bruce Springsteen’s album, Darkness on the Edge of Town. A new documentary, The Promise, about making the classic 1978 album will be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and will air on HBO in October.

The film includes vintage black and white studio footage of a young Springsteen working on the album and modern day interviews from past band members, Patti Smith, and the Boss himself, reported Rolling Stone Magazine.

"What really struck me about these interviews is the vivid sense of recall that they have," said Thom Powers, the Toronto festival’s programmer, in an interview with Rolling Stone. "You don't get the feeling that these are the same old stories they've polished up for the press all the time — especially with Springsteen."

Powers added what sets “The Promise” a part from most rock and roll documentaries is that it focuses on just one album and the creative process of bringing songs and music to life with improvisation and collaboration.

Ego, drug abuse, and the usually rock-star drama that can be seen in other documentaries are intentionally left out of the film.

An extra bonus about the film, Powers said, are original live studio recordings never heard or seen before by fans.
