Stephen Colbert to Testify Before Congress: UFW

Will the House receive Stephen’s tip of the hat or wag of the finger?

Comedy Central funnyman Stephen Colbert is planning another trip to the nation’s capital, where he will testify Friday alongside United Farm Workers President Arturo S. Rodriguez before the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, Refugees, Border Security, and International Law, Politico reports.

It is unclear what Colbert's message will be.

Per a UFW press release (via Politico) trumpeting the appearance: “Rodriguez appeared on a segment of "The Colbert Report" and Colbert spent a day in August working at a corn and vegetable farm in New York state.”

The UFW launched its national “Take Our Jobs” campaign on June 24, inviting U.S. citizens and legal residents to replace hundreds of thousands of immigrant field laborers, most of whom are undocumented. Since then, more than 3 million people have visited the campaign website, www.takeourjobs.org. Of those visitors, 8,600 have expressed an interest in seeking employment as farmworkers. Despite the numbers, only seven people have taken the UFW up on its offer to take a job in agriculture.

When Rodriguez last appeared on Colbert’s show in July, he said three Americans had signed up to work in the fields.

“Make that four. I’ll do it,” Colbert replied at the time. “Is there air conditioning?”

After Friday’s appearance before Congress, Colbert is set to return to Washington Oct. 30 to host a mock “March to Keep Fear Alive.”

The faux conservative news pundit has timed the rally to coincide with comedian Jon Stewart’s "Rally to Restore Sanity" event in D.C. the same day.
