And the 2014 Rose Parade Theme Is…

A big theme was chosen for the Pasadena party's big 125th.

How will you celebrate your quasquicentennial?

That's the rather magnificent word for a 125th anniversary, and it will apply to a rather magnificent event over the course of the next year: The Tournament of Roses.

To gear up and get the festivities started, the good people at the Wrigley Mansion, the tourney's longtime Pasadena HQ, did what they always do right around the third week in January: They announced the theme for the following year. (We like to imagine they have to get all of the stuff put away from New Year's Day first.)

And the 2014 theme for the Rose Parade presented by Honda? Dreams Come True. Scott Jenkins, the Tournament of Roses president for the upcoming event, announced the theme on the evening of Thursday, Jan. 17.

Call it a big theme for a big anniversary.

The Rose Parade indeed kicked off in 1890, when there citrus trees outnumbered citizens 'round these parts. People parading in their dressy best and horse-drawn carriages were characteristic of the procession's early days. (Mega motorized floats full of animated parts were still a few decades away.)

The date for the next Rose Parade? You know the month and number that follows it, but it is a Wednesday. We're still marveling a bit at the "2014" part. It follows 2013, of course, but it also means we're just about at the midpoint of this century's teens. Let's all marvel together now: How did that happen?
