Casa Vega's 60th Anniversary: 60¢ Deal

The special is on, every Thursday through June 1.

One simply cannot discuss vintage Southern California restaurants, the kind with deep booths and neon signs and classic-laden menus, without involving that vivaciously tasty Valley stalwart, the one that sits at the northwest corner of Ventura Boulevard and Fulton Avenue.

Casa Vega's mid-'50s kitsch isn't some recently adopted design methodology, though others have been inspired by its style; the Mexican eatery, which was founded by Ray Vega, has embraced that low-lit, red-booth-y vibe all along, a vibe that's further strengthened by the many oil paintings, Christmas lights, and brick-lined interior.

There's no doubt about it: 1956 lives on in lively fashion at the neon sign'd landmark. That was opening year for Casa Vega, and the restaurant will honor its six-decade run with an every-Thursday special, one that's set to run over several Thursdays starting on March 31.

What does "several Thursdays" mean? The "Throwback Thursdays" Taco & Tequila promotion is happening each Thursday through June 1, 2016.

That means this: If you show at Casa Vega on a Thursday during that span, and order "The Boss" margarita — it is Mr. Vega's "namesake" sip, which you may know — you'll get a Grilled Chicken Taco on the side for 60 cents.

The Boss, which is made with Patron Silver Tequila, Patron Citronage, Grand Marnier, and fresh lime is priced at $13.50, and there's a limit of one each for this particular combo promo (or promo combo, if you prefer). Are tax and tip extra? Yep, so account for those before settling up.

The full menu is also available, with dishes and drinks priced at their typical amounts, should you want to stay and snack on. Favorites over the years have included the Special "Oven Style" Burrito, the Casa Vega Molcajete, and that savory starter, Queso Fundido.

Casa Vega's hours? Be there anywhere from 11 a.m. to 2 o'clock in the morning for your sip and taco special. And raise a toast to this long-runner along the boulevard, a restaurant that's purveyed in guacamole, spirits, enchiladas, and local good times for six decades.

Oh yes, and has kept that iconic neon sign, one of the night-bright symbols of the Valley, all aglow for many years, too.
