Ensemble films, the kind of movies that feature several great actors, don't always enter the cinematic pantheon, nor do the performers on screen reveal a staying power through the decades to come.
But when such an occurrence happens? And the acting is solid? And the film proves to be of the decadent, not-so-guilty-pleasure variety? And there are so many rad '90s styles, clothing- and hair-wise, and breakbeat-y songs and heartbreak ballads on the soundtrack?
Our intentions are good here, with where we're going, because it is, of course, 1999's "Cruel Intentions" we're talking about.
The game's-afoot bon bon not only appealed to adolescents at the close of the last century, but to adults, too, and it continues to win over fresh fans, twenty years later.
The main players?
You know them from their "Cruel"-cool turns as well as seemingly a thousand other projects: Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Philippe, Selma Blair, Sean Patrick Thomas, Joshua Jackson, Reese Witherspoon, Eric Mabius, Tara Reid, and a host of awesome adult actors, including Christine Baranski.
The setting? Welcome to the upper-upper crust.
The vibe? Malicious, delicious maneuvering with some tender but tenuous moments woven through.
In honor of its first two decades, the movie is making a 20th anniversary return, for a one-week limited engagement, so better throw some classic Flat Boy Slim in the CD player, or The Cardigans or Counting Crows, and score your ticket now.
The Southern California theaters showing the showdown's-a-brewing movie are plentiful, with The Grove and ArcLight Culver City making the lengthy list.
Don your prep-school uniform, your rimless eyeglasses, and toss a sweater over your shoulders: The scheme-iest teen screen treat is showering us in late-'90s fashion and fantasy, for one week only.
