Without question or quibble, you want them all.
You crave the mole that has a fiery, chile-rich kick, and the mole that has a more sugary bent, and the mole that would be perfect at breakfast, either ladled over chilaquiles or a perfectly cooked fried egg.
But, let's be real: If you're a mole fan, you probably have one particular sauce you long for, even as you lavish love upon the entire line-up of flavorful toppers.
Traveling to Mexico to sample renowned moles in the spots they're most associated with is the dream of many foodies around the globe, but Southern Californians can fulfill some of that longing, while they plan those trips, at Grand Park on Sunday, Oct. 1.
The event is called La Feria de los Moles, and you can bet that a bevy of top-notch chefs and restaurants and mole pros will be out and around the downtown spot with ladles and maybe even a few tips in hand. (How does one make an expert mole that's so velvety in texture? Is there a way to create a mole that's sweet at the start of the first taste and hot at the finish?)
It's the 10th year for the mole-centered celebration, and, beyond the plentiful bites, there shall be much to enjoy on both the cultural and entertainment stages, too.
Charros de Tlaxcala, Ballet Folklórico Mexica, and Carnaval San Pedro Tlaltenango will appear on the cultural stage, while the entertainment area will welcome Los Chavos de la Cumbia, Omar Sanchez, and Los Huaches de Tierra Caliente. There are several other acts and artists, too, so check the roster for your favorites.
La Feria de los Moles is called "The Largest Mexican Food Festival in the U.S.," and whether you prefer your mole swirled with pepitas, or tomatillos, or chile ancho, or even white chocolate, you're bound to find bites you adore, and new restaurants and chefs to follow, at Grand Park on the first Sunday in October.
Your admission is free to the 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. event, but, of course, bring money to try all those marvelous moles.
