Tail-waggers on the water: Cheer on pups as they surf at Del Mar Dog Beach on Sunday, Sept. 9.

    • Del Mar Dog Beach

A tail-sporting, floppy-eared, whiskery-nosed water baby bounding along the beach?

It's not an uncommon sight around Southern California, for many of our pups are rather fond of the beach life. So fond, in fact, that they'll cry and whimper at the first scent of salt air, which, for a dog, can begin somewhere around the Inland Empire.

But there is a special event that bonds beach life to reaching out and helping other animals in need, a happening that arrives just as summer is enjoying its last swan song.

Or dog song, rather, for the canines of the Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon are the stars, not swans, at the annual Helen Woodward Animal Center. True, the center is located in Rancho Santa Fe, but the surfboard-centered action is centered at Del Mar Dog Beach, the site of a true community-come-together celebration.

    The 2018 date?

Our furry BFFs'll catch a wave on Sunday, Sept. 9. Helen Woodward Animal Center has been holding surf classes, for pooches and people, all summer long, so bet these hounds are ready for their salty-water'd spotlight.

The six-hour to-do, which begins at 8 a.m., will boast several on-the-beach happenings, like a dog agility course, crafts for children to make, various booths, food to buy, and more.

So, nope: Your dog isn't expected to surf, or even attend, if the waves and lots of people aren't his particular bag, but you certainly can, if you want to see this sweet and spectacular annual event.

An event that really does help numerous animals who arrive at the Helen Woodward Animal Center.

A donation helps, if you can make one, so show for a sandy day of giving back, late-summer sunshine, and a lot of happy, coat-soaked canines.
