First Peek: The Broad's Scaffolding Time-Lapse

Downtown's newest contemporary institution readies for its 2015 debut.

Scaffolding, to a SoCaler's eyes, is not an unusual sight. We almost expect every twelfth or thirteenth building we pass to have some construction or restoration work afoot.

In short? Coming across a web of poles and boards blocking an on-the-rise structure is as LA as a sunny day.

But when that scaffolding shields a much-talked-about building, one that will house some of the avant-garde-iest of contemporary art, well ... Priers want to pry, and spy what's underneath.

Future buffs of The Broad, the contemporary art museum set to debut on Grand Avenue downtown later this year, got their first full look at what the institution looks like when the scaffolding was unscaffolded just ahead of New Year's Day.

It's what we saw in the early renderings of Eli and Edythe Broad's museums — a soft-seeming pocketed building boasting a modern and whimsical honeycomb style, if you will — but now The Broad physically stands before Grand, grandly, and not on a screen or sheet of paper.

And is that oval in the center something people will note? It draws the eye, and, yes, the imagination.

The opening is still months away — autumn is The Broad's hello season — but fans currently on excited tenterhooks for this newest addition to the Southern California cultural landscape can get some Broad action now, in the form of a scaffolding-oriented video.
