Free Father's Day Fun: Rodeo Drive Concours d'Elegance

Three legendary motor routes get the spotlight at the wondrous wheels show.

The thing about possessing a penchant for admiring well-made automobiles is that those automobiles, when spied, tend to be moving at a rather impressive clip, as are, most likely, you and your own car.

True, you can sometimes find a dream machine parked by the side of the road, which makes ogling ever so much easier. But locating dozens of dream machines, in a row, that you might admire without paying any admission, is a considerable coup for any car fan.

Many of those car fans'll be out along Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills on Sunday, June 21 at the annual Concours d'Elegance. Why, yes, that is Father's Day, so many a dad and kids shall be out among the vehicles, looking and pointing and discussing steering wheels and hood ornaments and horsepower.

As always with this fender-laden 22-year-along happening, there is a specific theme, though the 2015 theme brings a twist -- or a bend in the road, if your prefer. Rather than highlighting a single make or model or company or brand, the Concours d'Elegance will pay homage to "Highways to Heaven," those famous roads known the world over for their driving style, ease of use, or storied history.

Two are in Europe -- Italy's Autostrade and the Autobahn in Germany -- while a blacktop in the ol' U.S. of A. makes the third star of the day. Have a guess? You're so right: Route 66 rounds out the trio of legendary highways.

Expect to see a wide range of cars during your visit, from the new 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C Coupe to the 2015 Ford Mustang to a 1927 Rolls Royce Phantom. It's an auto extravaganza that doesn't just lay down the red carpet for vintage beauties. The future gets a little love, too, so prepare yourself to talk about "turbocharge" and "intercooling" and the terms that apply to modern car tech.

Time? It's on during the day, all along Rodeo, from 10 o'clock to 4 in the afternoon, so you can do brunch for Dad and arrive in the Golden Triangle in time to do some heavy-duty lookie-loo-ing. And that gives you just enough time, if you wish, to catch Santa Monica Boulevard on your way home, for a little driving along Route 66.

That's right: One of the honorees of the 2015 Concours d'Elegance sits just north of the event itself, or at least a portion of it does. Route 66 in LA is almost synonymous with Santa Monica Boulevard, so celebrating the famous road's history, and then driving it, is as meta, free, and Father's-Day fun as outings get.
