Saying something is "freezing" in July or August?

It isn't a word that gets a lot of play, because, frankly, it can feel a little fiery out at times, or at least notably toasty when afternoon begins to melt everything we touch.

But there is a lot of freezing going on in Laguna Beach, of the stay-in-place variety, when the world-famous Pageant of the Masters returns. As it will again, on July 7, for a close-to-two-month run of wondrous, stand-like-a-statue artistry.

If you know your tableaux vivant history, then you know that this cultural and slightly quirky heart of the pretty beachside city can trace its colorful timeline back to the 1930s.

In the decades that followed, hundreds and hundreds of well-known works of art have been painstakingly recreated, live and on stage, using costumed performers in the places of a painting's or sculpture's prominent figures.

The literally breathtaking, or at least breathholding, result?

Viewers have been known to hold their collective breath, as the on-stage performers hold theirs (or, at least, show a lot of stillness, poise, and control).

The 2019 theme is "The Time Machine," ohhh. "(A)udiences will be transported around the globe and into the past, present, and future in search of great art and amazing stories."

Tickets are still available, though nights do fill up.

So while "freezing" will be the thing in Laguna Beach from July 7 through Aug. 31, 2019, don't freeze now. Move in the direction of your seat, and the experience of finally knowing what one of the Golden State's most surreal and spectacular stage shows is all about.
