How wide is the space, or long is the time, rather, between Halloween and the holidays?
There's an actual measurable answer to that question, and it is factually and actually this: Fourteen hours.
That's the short span that runs from midnight on the hauntingest day of the year to the opening time at Ice, the annual seasonal ice rink in Downtown Santa Monica.
For once the ice rinks skate into Southern California, you can pretty much say that, yeah, a certain peppermint-scented, jingle-lingle-ding joy has officially kicked off 'round the region.
Or glided off, if you prefer, to use the parlanace of ice skaters.
And the gliding shall commence, in enthusiastic earnest, at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at the corner of Fifth Street and Arizona Avenue in Santa Monica. Which means that you could almost, allllmost go ice skating while wearing your Halloween costume, if you've still got it on or you left it somewhere handy, like the top of the hamper.
The 8,000-square-foot rink, which is just a few short blocks from the beach (as its Fifth Street location would suggest), will be open through Monday, Jan. 15, 2018.
