Chilaquiles, a celebratory sesquicentennial, and plenty of civic pride?

That sounds like a recipe for a perfect birthday celebration for a major city, one that stays connected to its history, supports the arts, and stands tall as a vibrant Southern California hub of ideas, positive change, and community come-togetherness.

It's Santa Ana, we're rhapsodizing about, and the Orange County hub is about to have a very happy 150th birthday party.

You're invited, and if you like birthdays that revolve around breakfast, and basically everyone does, then you'll want to get to the downtown area early on Sunday, July 28.

For that's when the city is reviving a hallowed tradition that was first celebrated in 1928. We're talking about Santa Ana's Historic Street Breakfast, which, yes, involves people dining upon eggs and such while under the sky and near all of the area's splendid vintage structures.

The 150th birthday party will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., your ticket is ten bucks, and that includes chilaquiles, pancakes, and a beverage. Chef Richard Espinachio is creating the homemade 'n hearty chilaquiles, and the vegan migas, too, while Loaded Cafe will fashion those flapjacks.

If you've long loved Santa Ana, as many do, this is a fine way to show it, all while connecting with locals, fans, and the people who regularly call upon its theaters, galleries, and restaraunts.

As befits the auspicious occasion, there'll be a group photo, and speeches, and other moments that feel just right for a big 150th birthday party.

Happy century, plus another half century, to a great place. And, for sure, when we turn 150, we're going the street party route, with homemade chilaquiles for all.
