New OC Fair Food: Krispy Kreme Sloppy Joe

Savory sauciness meets sweet 'n sticky in Costa Mesa.

When Chicken Charlie's, that mischievous-minded food laboratory that pops up at our local county fairs, introduced the Krispy Kreme chicken sandwich a few years ago, fair goers had to figure all bets were off.

Meaning that if something could be encased, wrapped-in, or flavored with a Krispy Kreme doughnut, no matter how outlandish, the forward-thinking inventors behind the Chicken Charlie's counter would be one step ahead.

And they've made another savory stride forward in doughnut-meat technology: the Krispy Kreme Sloppy Joe.

The Orange County Fair made the hearty announcement a few weeks ahead of the fair's opening date, surely, in part, to let the image reel in many a snack-curious mind.

But the Krispy Kreme Sloppy Joe -- which is indeed a ladle of tomato-y spiced beef served between two sticky doughnuts -- has to share its culinary crown with some other outlandish edibles at the 2013 Costa Mesa spectacular.

Like? Well, deep-fried bacon-wrapped pickles, for one. Truffle Gouda bacon fries, for two. And a hot dog on a stick, which isn't all that unusual, but, wait for it: This one is wrapped in a waffle.

We'll pause here in case you need to collect yourself.
