Opening: Free Downtown Sing-Alongs

Gather outside Disney Hall and mi-mi-mi to your heart's happy content.

It's a well-known fact that residents of Southern California break into song anywhere from three to five times a day, depending on traffic and June Gloom and whether the Dodgers have a home game and if the jacaranda are in bloom.

Well, that's what the movies tell us, anyway. But while it isn't all that rare to see an Angeleno warbling a full-lunged ballad on some random street on the big screen, vocalizing in an al fresco setting is a bit trickier in real life.

Unless, that is, you're at the W. M. Keck Amphitheatre outside Walt Disney Concert Hall over a select number of summertime nights. Then the singing under the open sky gets major, and loud, and lovely, and vibrant, and all things that a song sung outdoors should be.

We're speaking, of course, of the much-loved Friday Night Sing-Alongs, which debut in dazzling, get-down style on Friday, June 20.

Make that free dazzling get-down style. You don't need to pay a thing to sing.

Night one is devoted to that Detroit Sound, so, yep yep, that means Motown and that means some KISS, too. Future themes of the sing-alongs still to come? Expect Anthems That Rock, Songs of '64, Broadway Favorites, and Mariachi.

Look for the sing-alongs to fall every other Friday, through the middle of August. Oh, and the July 4 event? Make for Music Center Plaza and not Walt Disney Concert Hall.

We tease cinematic singing, but there's a reason for all of that impromptu belting-out-of-ballads in films: It just feels good to unite in song. People have been doing it, oh, since there've been people, so there must be some positive benefits behind the easy-to-do, doesn't-cost-a-dime, oh-so-joyful act.

Plus, don't you want to croon "I wanna rock 'n roll all night and party every day" at Disney Hall? Who'd dare pass up that chance?

Don't forget your KISS boots.
