Rib-Sticking Santa Anita Chili Cook-off Heats Up

Spoon up spicy stews at the Arcadia landmark, and cheer on the ponies, too.

What exactly constitutes a taste of chili?

It might be one of those miniature spoons, a "just try it out" eating implement. It could be a deeper soup spoon, the kind that allows you to get a sense of all of the ingredients in one fell and flavorful swoop.

But a two-ouncer, brimming with bean-packed kapow and a meat-based heartiness? That's going to do the trick. And it is a tasty trick that will be performed over and over again, ten times in a row, at the Santa Anita Chili Cook-Off.

The steamy, slurpy, spicy spectacular is set for the final Saturday in February, which feels like an ideal day to address any stew-based longings. After all, once March sweeps in, so does Daylight Saving Time, and spring, and all of the other hotter hallmarks of a warmer season.

So now is the moment to fill your tum with toasty chili, on Feb. 23. Nab ten two-ounce tastes, plus a craft beer or vino, plus a five-dollar betting voucher and other accoutrements to make your racing day fun, all for $30.

Yep, you should be 21, or older, before going for this chili-themed package.

Yep, there'll be racing, as that betting voucher indicates, which means you can enjoy hot eats and horsey happenings at the very same time.
