The 90s Nostalgia You Didn't Know You Needed From ‘Captain Marvel'

Marvel's first female led film is a throwback to grunge and girl power.

What to Know

  • "Captain Marvel" is played by Brie Larsen.
  • The film is set in the 1990s.
  • "Captain Marvel" opens March 8th.

"Captain Marvel" is the first female led Marvel Cinematic Universe film and 90s kids will probably love it more than the comic book crowd. Set in the 1990s, "Captain Marvel" starts in the middle of her origin story, then works its way back, then forward again. Confused yet?

Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) is fighting with the Kree in the intergalactic elite military called Starforce when she's sent on a mission that goes awry. Through a series of flashbacks and cool fight scenes, she ends up on Earth where she connects with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and discovers that her loyalties have been misplaced in the Kree.

So she sets out to make it right and has more cool fight scenes. The plot can get a little muddled but the action scenes are worth wading through the slower parts of the film.

That's because each action packed fight scene has a perfectly 90s theme song to match. Some of them are so on the nose, like No Doubt's "I'm Just A Girl," that you would be mad if they didn't play it.

There are a lot of female empowerment themes running through this film, and audiences may get turned off by it. We get it. She's a female AND she's a superhero who kicks butt. But when you leave the movie feeling like the real star was her Nine Inch Nails shirt and the grungy soundtrack, then something has gone beyond marvel and into meh.

Never fear, there is an awesome teaser at the end which you'll want to stick around for. This is the last MCU movie before "Avengers: Endgame" which will be the end of an era for some major MCU players, but not the universe itself. "Avengers: Endgame" comes out April 26th.
