‘Toy Story 4' New Characters, New Story, Same Sweet Feelings

The toy box is back open and all the toys are ready for another adventure.

What to Know

  • “Toy Story,” was originally released on Nov. 22, 1995 and was the highest grossing movie of the year.
  • "Toy Story 4" opens June 21st.
  • Forky is played by Tony Hale.

Many people assumed the "Toy Story" story was over. The last film came out nine years ago with the toys narrowly escaping death in a heartbreaking scene. They were eventually given to a new child, Bonnie, who lovingly created a new home and new adventures for them to have. That's where "Toy Story 4" picks up.

Director Josh Cooley said Pixar definitely had more stories to tell with these characters.

"Turns out it was only the end of Woody's story with Andy. Just like in life, every ending is a new beginning. Woody now being in a new room, with new toys and a new kid, was something we have never seen before. The question of what that would be like became the beginning of an entertaining story worth exploring."

Tom Hanks (Woody) and Tim Allen (Buzz Lightyear) are back and joined by familiar characters and some new faces. Audiences will love the endearing, childlike qualities of Forky - a spork Bonnie made into a toy and decides is her most favorite thing in the world. Forky is played by Tony Hale who says Forky's whole existence is questioned in this film and it's a sweet journey to watch.

"His whole existence was, I'm made for chili and then to go in the trash," Hale said. "And Woody comes along and says, you have a greater purpose, you have a greater value."

Forky isn't the only new character joining the toys, Duke Caboom is played wholeheartedly by Keanu Reeves, who seems to really be enjoying himself in the role. Caboom is a 1970's toy based on Canada's greatest stuntman. It's hilarious to watch him relive his glory days, and to say Caboom over and over again.

Christina Hendricks plays a misunderstood doll named Gabby Gabby. And a highlight is the pairing of Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele as Duck and Bunny.

There are several underlying themes in the film about love, loss and friendship. All of which are staples that have endeared the Toy Story franchise to audiences for nearly 25 years. And as with most things in Hollywood, there's a good chance this won't be the last we see of these toys any time soon.

"Toy Story 4" comes out June 21st and stars Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Annie Potts, Keanu Reeves, Christina Hendricks and Tony Hale. It was directed by Josh Cooley.
