Weekend: Alfresco Fests Aplenty

Santa Monica, Hermosa Beach, and Pasadena will all take the revelries outside.

Festivals Under the Sun: Finding a backyard to soak in some rays over Memorial Day Weekend? Not too difficult. Nor is locating a large-scale revelry that incorporates fresh air, sunshine, and nice breezes. Eat Drink Vegan'll head to the Rose Bowl & Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena on Saturday, May 27, Fiesta Hermosa returns to Hermosa Beach from May 27 through the 29th, and MAINopoly: A Taste of Main Street calls upon several Santa Monica eateries on Sunday, May 28. And in Garden Grove? The juicy, decades-along Strawberry Festival shall bloom from May 26-29.

Memorial Day Weekend: As is tradition, both the USS Iowa and the Queen Mary will offer free admission to active military members and veterans, with the San Pedro-based battleship hosting a music festival on Saturday, May 27 and the Queen Mary's World War II displays open and ready for viewing throughout the weekend. Downtown at Clifton's Republic? A 1940s-style music presentation'll summon the bygone days on May 28 and 29, while, out at the Palm Springs Air Museum, the traditional carnation drop is scheduled for Monday, May 29.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission — BREAKOUT Opens: Follow Rocket on an adventure to rescue the Guardians from The Collector's fortress? Sounds pretty cool, but we don't have a way to get to space. Of course, we could just make for Disney California Adventure, and call upon the new ride, which is located in the former Twilight Zone Tower of Terror structure. Does it still drop? It most certainly does. Will there be a whole Summer of Heroes thing going on at the park, too? You bet. When does it start? Saturday, May 27.

Frog Spot and Frog Exhibit: Spying two amphibians hopping down the same path? Pretty lucky, though this pair of frogs aren't related. There's the opening of the beloved Frog Spot, the LA River-close, Elysian Valley hangout, on May 27 (music, yoga, special events to come). And there's the opening of "Frogs: Dazzling and Disappearing" at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, a new exhibit examining the wonderful universe of frogage (and the not-so-wonderful issues they face). Where will you hop first, froggists?

Grunion Fish-tival: If you fancy frogs, but you're really ga-ga for grunion, shake a tail and swim for Cabrillo Marine Aquarium on Saturday, May 27. There's a whole evening devoted to the wee fin-boasting marvels, complete with crafts, talks, and more. As for the "more" end of things? You'll stroll down to the beach, later in the evening, to watch the silver fishies wriggle onto the beach to spawn. Make sure you're rocking your foil-cool grunion hat, one of the highlights of the night.
