Festival of Whales: When you call something "as big as a whale," well, you're going for a gargantuan image. And, true story? That's just the sort of phrasing that the annual late-winter bash in Dana Point deserves. The mondo festivity is, in fact, as big as a whale, covering two weekends, and not just one. Weekend #2 is up, and the schedule is, yes, whale-big. A clam chowder cook-off, a mammal lecture, a Whale of a Concert on the Water, art, classic boats, and a line-up of whale-watching tours are all on the schedule. March 9 and 10
Festival of Kites: If you dig your free festivals, and you like them near the beach, then the upcoming weekend will brim with good things for you. For this decades-along delight, a true celebration of diving, swooping, and fluttering artworks of the air, will again dazzle-up the sky near Redondo Beach pier. You don't have to participate, if you don't have a kite, so stop by and watch, if you just love a wind-whirly shape doing its string-attached thing. There are prizes, though, for the kite-flying set, including "highest flying." The start time for the March 10 event is zoom, zoom, noon.
Music Education for Girls Initiative: International Woman's Day is March 8, and finding a place to observe the occasion, and a way to support its important vision and spirit, will be essential to many. And if music is also a significant part of your world, you can help support Music Education for Girls at any Guitar Center store. Fifty percent of all D'Addario and Co. items sold at the stores will be donated to the D'Addario Foundation's initiative, which "supports young women in their personal and professional musical endeavors." Details? Rock on for this awesome event, right here.
Spring Bloom Walks: A huge-of-scale celebration devoted to a flowering fruit tree? So amazing, so full of sights, so packed with activities. Sometimes, though, you're seeking a quieter expression of the moment when winter tips its hat to spring. That can be found on these Descanso Garden walks, which take visitors by the La Cañada Flintridge destination's famous flowery trees. Some are at peak bloom, as of the first week in March, and some are just getting going, but fret not: The Spring Bloom Walks are on for a few weeks. How to join? Your Descanso Gardens admission has you in the pink.
ArtNight Pasadena: There's a reason that lots of people show up for this one, and it is this: It is so free, and so expansive, and there are shuttles to zip you around, from this gallery to that museum to this pop-up happening, and food trucks and musical performances complement all of the visual art enjoyment. The date is March 8, the whole shebang is four hours long, and several Crown City classics are participating, including the Gamble House, Norton Simon Museum, and Armory Center for the Arts. You probably can't truly see it all, but you can focus on a few places for soak-it-all-in bliss.
