Weekend: Eye the Rose Floats Up-Close

See the bud-beautiful artistry of the parade's mondo vehicles.

A Showcase of Floats: You can lean close to your television or computer, or stand on tiptoe on a curb, but seeing the finer, flowery details of the Rose Parade floats is an act best saved for the end. The Tournament of Roses understands our curiosity, which means when the parade isn't over, it isn't actually over: The bud- and seed-covered vehicles will be on display via the Post-Parade: A Showcase of Floats Presented by Miracle-Gro though Saturday, Jan. 3. Where to find them? At E. Washington and Sierra Madre Boulevards in Pasadena. The cost? It's ten dollars. The wow factor? It's high.

New Year's Race Los Angeles: If you're around downtown on Saturday, Jan. 3, you may wonder what all of the many, many runners you're seeing on the streets are doing. They're participating in a nighttime run -- think half marathon, 10K, or 5K -- and they're taking in the lit windows and still-sparkly holiday decorations of City Hall, Grand Park, and other iconic structures and places. Never joined a jog by night? Here's your chance to change that up, and launch your get-healthy resolution.

Oshogatsu Family Festival: We'll soon be baa-ing our way into the Year of the Sheep, and the Japanese American National Museum wants to celebrate. Join the Sunday, Jan. 4 kid-sweet doings, which include a Daruma doll craft table, an origami workshop, and a storytime spotlighting the beasties who romp through the Asian zodiac calendar. Admission is free to the fest, though museum admission is required for the ongoing, oh-so-popular Hello, Kitty exhibit.

The Four King Cousins: The ultra-cool heyday of '60s-era Vegas is often mimicked by people wanting to capture its swanky style, and this quartet lived it, authentically, performing at The Frontier Hotel in 1968 and a bevy of va-voom-y venues throughout the '60s and 1970s. The music of the time is ever appealing, as are the song stylings of Tina, Cathy, Candy, and Carolyn. If you want to wear a "Mad Men"-type pinafore to the Catalina Jazz Club on Saturday, Jan. 3, we say go for it.

Captured Aural Phantasy Theater: If you're still craving more swank-a-tude after a night of vintage-good tunes at the Catalina, El Cid is the place to make on Sunday, Jan. 4. The retro-lively troupe Captured Aural Phantasy will take on comic books with a live show about the life, times, and superheroic storylines of our favorite caped characters, settings, and supervillains. Date? Sunday, Jan. 4. Tickets? Ten bucks. Potential to dress as a comic book character or in something outlandishly vintage? Pretty dang high, if that's your thing (fingers crossed that it is).
