Weekend: ScareLA Halloween Convention

Shivery delights, haunted yard props, and eeky mazes grow, vine-like, at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

ScareLA: The sun may be beaming its starry heart out at the moment, and the thermometers may be a peak thermometer-ing, but Halloween is here, or at least Halloween preparation, at the Los Angeles Convention Center's West Hall. The started-in-2013 convention is known for VR horror experiences, haunted houses, experts giving tips on make-up, yard haunts, and everything you need to make your autumntime super-haunted. It's open to all ages, and, yes: Many attendees give their Halloween costumes a first run. The dates? No need to shiver: It's all haunting, er, happening, on Saturday, Aug. 5 and Sunday, Aug. 6.

Downtown Burbank Car Classic: It's the season for rolling along the open highway, and finding adventure, and maybe the Biggest Ball of String, and your ride? Fingers crossed it is vintage, and a convertible, and rocking some tall fins. If this is your car-style scene, be along San Fernando Road in downtown Burbank on Saturday, Aug. 5, for 150 old-school, still-amazing, polished-to-a-high-shine vehicles will be on display, including a caboodle of movie cars. Cost to enter? Oh yeah, sing with us now: It's free.

Avocado Fest: Are you 21 or older, dig the Arts District, adore Angel City Brewery, and have to have a slice or five of avo on absolutely everything you eat? Here's your party on Saturday, Aug. 5 and Sunday, Aug. 6, and, yes, the brewery's famous Avocado Ale will make a prominent appearance, as will other avocado-licious goodies. There's live music, there's a mural to help create, there's a beer garden, and there are avocado-themed contests. It's a ripe ol' time that's become a summer must-do.

"The Lion King" x Two: You've been feeling a little "Hakuna Mata"-ish lately? You're in some kind of happy luck. A sing-along built around 1994's "The Lion King" roars at the El Capitan in Hollywood for a multi-day run beginning on Friday, Aug. 4 while over at The Greek on Saturday, Aug. 5? A Fandango-helmed sing-along of the beloved animated film. Making the evening extra special is a much-anticipated appearance by Tshidi Manye, who plays Rafiki on Broadway. Ms. Manye will sing "The Circle of Life" at The Greek, a sure-to-be memorable performance.

Hatch Chile Roasting Season Opens: There's a certain scent in the air at your local grocery store when August arrives. It's mysterious, alluring, and synonymous with late summer. What is it? It's a whole bushel of hot chile-mazing goodness straight from New Mexico, the kind of fragrance that comes when the peppers are roasted to crackling perfection. A number of markets, from Ralph's to Gelson's, and El Rey Farms, too, will be out in the coming weeks at various locations, on select dates, with the big roasting machines. Best find out when/where the fiery stuff will be near you.
