Porsche has turned an old South Bay golf course into a high-performance driving theme park featuring the German brand most exciting rides.

The 53-acre Porsche Experience Center opened this week off South Main Street in Carson. The sprawling property features several driving circuits, a museum, restaurant, driving simulators and about 80 vehicles that represent the range of the Porsche brand, from hard-core sports cars to SUVs.

From above, the property looks something like a race track -- but it's not just about speed. The Handling Circuit is actually designed to mirror the experience of driving on a country road with corners and undulations, making the car go light over crests and bite down on the road in compression zones.

The Kick Plate -- a large plate aligned flush with the road -- uses a hydraulic system to upset the car and induce loss of rear traction. It's then up to the driver to react.

On Ice Hill, water jets spray the low-friction surface to simulate slippery road conditions. There's an Off Road course to test skills in the Porsche Cayenne sport utility vehicle and Acceleration Straight, which allows drivers to get an idea of how the car responds under acceleration.

Visitors can choose from more than 20 driving experiences that include guidance from car coaches. Prices range from $385 for 90 minutes in Porsche's mid-engine Cayman sports car to $950 for 90 minutes in Porsche's 911 Turbo and 911 GT3.

There's also a Master the Manual course ($665 for 90 minutes) that celebrates "the unity of man and machine." The stars of the party are a 911 Carrera S and the new Cayman GT4.

"Above all, this facility is all about the experience. It's a place for visitors to touch and feel the brand in all its facets," Klaus Zellmer, president and chief executive officer of Porsche Cars North America, told NBC4 radio partner KPCC. "The simplest, most credible, authentic way to do this is hand over the set of keys for a wonderful sports car and say trust it, drive it, enjoy it."

Porsche said about 50,000 people per year from around the world are expected to visit the venue south of downtown Los Angeles. Atlanta is home to the only other Porsche Experience in the United States, and California is a major market for the German brand. One in four Porsches sold in the United States is in California.

<![CDATA[When Auto Designers Imitate Nature]]>Tue, 19 Nov 2013 20:42:19 -0800https://media.nbclosangeles.com/images/212*120/suba-roo-1.jpg

Grasshoppers, cranes, ants, kangaroos and the Los Angeles River provided some of the inspiration behind this year's Design Challenge at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

More Coverage: Green Car Finalists | LA Auto Show

The theme for the challenge was biomimicry -- using nature to solve human mobility problems in the year 2025.

Each year, the Design Challenge asks design studios from around the world to come up with ideas -- no matter how far-fetched -- for the future of personal transportation. Here's what this year's paticpants have to offer.

2013 Design Challenge Entries

KAC Motors R&D Center, Japan
JAC Motors' "HEFEI" entry stands for Harmonious Eco-Friendly Efficient Infrastructure. The idea is a mobility network inspired by the eco-system -- vehicles and the environment working together with a power grid that supports the entire system and automated traffic.

Mazda Design Americas, Japan
The rise of the machines means decreased driver involvement by 2025, so the Mazda Design Americas studio offered "AUTO ADAPT." Taking its cue from insects that adapt to their environments, the Mazda vehicle can go from full autonomous to manual. The system provides the excitement of actually driving a vehicle in an age of automation.

SAIC Motor, China
The Mobiliant design was inspired by ants. It's a single-seater for negotiating urban areas with design elements borrowed from an ant's body structure -- the vehicle's body is separated into three active parts, allowing it to react to road surfaces and conditions.

Qoros Auto, China
The Silk Road System is designed to make vehicles work in harmony. Mimicking ants that share food, vehicles with a surplus of energy can transmit energy to vehicles with low energy levels, making everyone productive and happy.

Subaru Global Design Team, Japan
Subaru's design team takes a leap forward with the "SUBA-ROO" system. It's a one-legged wearable mobility vehicle that mimics the jumps of a kangaroo, allowing the user to bound over trails, beaches, even buildings.

BMW Group DesignWorks, USA
LA's "forgotten waterways" provide the solution to the city's traffic congestion in 2025. "LA Subways," inspired by jelly fish, envisions a swarm of robotic vehicles using the concrete-walled LA River to move around the region -- just add water.

BMW Group DesignWorks, USA
S.E.E.D. stands for Sustainable Efficient Exploratory Device. Designers wanted a vehicle that could travel to and explore some of the planet's harshest environments, so they turned to maple seeds. The seeds use gravity, wind and other natural elements for mobility.

Changfeng Motor Corporation, China
The Los Angeles Bio Research Project uses a flexible hollow reed design in a spiral configuration that can contract and expand, taking its design from a grasshopper. It can jump, climb, swim and squeeze between narrow openings -- such as a grocery store parking space.

CALTY Design Research/Toyota Design Network, USA
The "e-grus" was inspired by the crane, capable of traveling long distances. The bird-brained design is the studio team's answer to increasing commute distances by 2025.

The Design LA will be selected by a panel of design experts at the LA Auto Show. The show at the Los Angeles Convention Center is scheduled for Nov. 22 to Dec. 1

The finalists for this year's LA Auto Show "Green Car Challenge" feature models that take different paths to efficiency.

The award honoring the vehicles that raise the bar for environmental performance has been presented at the show since 2005. The winner will be selected by a panel of automotive enthusiasts and experts.

Green Car Challenge 5 Finalists

Audi A6 TDI
Audi's popular sedan uses the company's 3.0-liter, 6-cylinder turbo diesel engine to combine efficiency and performance. The car also features a stop-start system and lightweight materials, such as aluminum body panels. The estimated 38-mpg highway allows for a driving range of more than 700 miles.

BMW 328d
BMW's take on "green" features its first 4-cyclinder disel engine in the United States. The car also features a stop-start system and captures energy produced under braking. The 328d has an EPA esimated of 45 mpg on the highway.

Honda Accord
Fuel efficiency is featured all allong the Accord lineup. The automaker offers four-cylinder, V-6, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid versions -- the hybrid achieves 50 mpg city, 47 highway, according to EPA estimates. The Accord plug-in model has an EPA rating of 115 MPGe -- the best of any mid-size sedan sold in the United States.

The automaker's restyled model -- its best-selling worldwide -- includes the company's SkyActiv technology. The 3's 2.5-liter model includes a system called i-ELOOP, which continuously recovers energy produced when the car decelerates. The charge is stored for use to power headlights, climate control and other electrics.

Toyota Corolla
It's still affordable, but no longer the tame-looking Corolla of just a few years ago. The Eco version offers 42 highway mpg from a 1.8-liter engine that produces 140 horsepower.

The legendary automobile that started out as a Lincoln Futura concept before famed Southern California car customizer George Barris -- the "King of the Kustomizers" -- got his skilled hands on it and turned it into a TV star will be up for auction in January.

Batmobile No. 1 is listed as Lot 5037 for the Jan. 13-20 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale, Ariz., auction -- an event that attracts some of the world's most enthusiastic and financially well-equipped car collectors.

The reserve price for the 1966 Batmobile is not public, but expect bids in the millions for a piece of automotive and Hollywood history that still looks like something from the future. The auction listing describes the Barris creation as the icon that "defied the odds of making a car become the star."

The car -- Barris visited the LA Auto Show with it this week during press days -- is scheduled to cross the auction block Jan. 19 between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.

"It has become a true icon that has been carried from generation to generation of Batmobiles to follow," said Craig Jackson, Chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. "It revolutionized an entire industry that followed in its footsteps."

The original Batmobile was a bubble-topped concept car unveiled at the 1955 Chicago Auto Show. Barris, whose Barris Kustom Ind. shop is at 10811 Riverside Drive, bought the light blue Lincoln Futura concept to add to his personal collection.

He kept the car in his garage for several years before a meeting with the producer of the "Batman" TV series, who gave him a budget of $15,000 and a 15-day timeline to build a screen-ready automobile fit for the Caped Crusader's Batcave.

"Pow, it would have rocket tubes go up. Bang, we had chain slicers, oil squirters and nail throwers and everything else," Barris told NBC4's Patrick Healy in 2011. "The car became a star."

The car has a 1956 Lincoln V-8 engine and loads of Bat-gadgets, courtesy of Barris' imagination. Bat Ray Projector, Batscope, Bat Eye Switch, Remote Batcomputer, Batphone, Emergency Bat Turn Lever and Bat Smoke came standard on the Barris model.

Barris can still be found at his business on Riverside Drive, where an historic marker on the light pole marks the location. The Batmobile, other Barris originals and walls covered with pictures of stars and their cars are inside the building.

Barris also created the Munsters' Coach, Dragula, KITT from "Knight Rider" and the "Beverly Hillbillies" jalopy.

Nearly every automaker at this year's LA Auto Show can claim to have at least one vehicle in its lineup built with fuel efficiency and tailpipe emissions in mind.

So, selecting five finalists for the show's annual Green Car of the Year award has become more of a challenge since it was first presented eight years ago.

"What's tougher these days is narrowing down the universe of great candidates to a field of five nominees, as we have today," said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and president of the Green Car Institute.

Past finalists have included hybrids, plug-in hybrids, electric cars, clean diesel, petrol-powered cars and last year's winner -- a Honda Civic than runs on compressed natural gas. This year's field of five nominees was announced Thursday.

2013 Green Car of the Year Award Finalists:

Dodge Dart Aero
: Conventional power, but high mpg. The Aero is a special trim level with aerodynamic features. With its turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, the Dart Aero is expected to achieve in the neighborhood of 41 mpg.

Ford C-MAX: Ford will offer the C-MAX in hybrid and Energi plug-in hybrid models. The Energi will be Ford's first production plug-in hybrid, adding to the list of Toyota Prius plug-in competitors.

Ford Fusion: The Fusion stands out in the competitive mid-size market. It also will be offered in conventional, hybrid and plug-in models for 2013.

Mazda CX-5 SkyACTIV: Another conventionally powered vehicle that provides high mpg. The compact crossover is expected to achieve about 33 mpg (highway) with its fuel efficient 4-cylinder.

Toyota Prius c
: The smaller, more urban-friendly, less expensive Prius. It features a smaller, less powerful variant of the standard Prius' hybrid powertrain.

The vehicles will be on display at the 2013 LA Auto Show, Nov. 30 through Dec. 9 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The winner, selected by a panel that includes Sierra Club executive director Michael Brune, Ocean Futures Society president Jean-Michel Cousteau, and Global Green USA president Matt Petersen, will be announced Nov. 29. Local automotive enthusiast and "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno also is on the Green Car panel.

Nearly 50 vehicles will debut later this month when the Los Angeles Auto Show opens at the LA Convention Center.

That number includes 24 world debuts and 25 vehicles that will be unveiled for the first time in North America. Some of the debuts are concept vehicles, others are ready for the road.

A look at some of the confirmed debuts:

Acura: The RLX is a tech-laden sedan from Honda's luxury division. The automaker says it "behaves not as a machine, but as an extension of your instincts."

Audi: Several North American debuts, all under what is usually one of the most appealing displays on the convention floor.

BMW: The i8 Spyder Plug-In Hybrid is a concept car with design elements similar to the model featured in "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol." BMW also is set to make an "undisclosed world debut" and take the wraps off its X1 Limited Edition.

Chevrolet Spark EV
: The all-electric version of Chevy's Spark runabout, which looks like something you could pick up and hug after parking near your friend's loft apartment in a congested urban area.

Fiat: Add E and L to the end of 500 and you get the tiny Fiat in an all-electric version (500e) and another with five doors (500L).

Ford: Updates for the compact Fiesta and extremely useful Transit Connect.

Jaguar: The automaker that blessed the automotive world decades and a few parent companies ago with the incomparable E-Type adds the highly anticipated F-Type roadster to its lineup.

Mercedes-Benz: The GL 63 AMG high-performance SUV, SLS AMG GT and SLS AMG Black Series -- the striking SLS on a high-carbon fiber diet -- all make debuts.

MINI: The Paceman, which borrows styling from the MINI coupe, offers more room and versatility. The Clubvan is MINI's take on the delivery van.

Nissan: Concept cars often point toward designs to come. The Hi-Cross provides an idea of where Nissan is headed in the crossover market.

Porsche: The 2013 911 Carrera will make its North American debut. A second Porsche, described as a "compact sports car," will make its world debut.

Editor's Note: Bentley, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Land Rover, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Subaru, and VW also will present debut vehicles at the LA Auto Show, scheduled for Nov. 30 through Dec. 9 at the LA Convention Center.

A 1965 Chevy Impala SS's long road back to its original owner had plenty of twists and turns.

Herb Younger and his two sons, who tracked down the beloved Chevy that Younger sold 20 years ago, were part of Chevrolet's presentation Wednesday at the LA Auto Show -- bridging the automakers' history with its new car lineup.

Younger, of Redondo Beach, bought the car in the fall of 1964 in Fort Collins, Colo., but had to sell it in the late 1980s. After five years and seven owners, Derek and Jared, who remember riding in the Impala as children, found the car at a dealer in Canada and reunited their father with an old friend.

"It was overwhelming," Younger said Wednesday. "I had no idea. It's in the garage, and every day I go down there and touch it and think, 'Wow, it's really here.'"

The Younger brothers' search began about five years ago. They had no way of knowing whether dad's Impala was scrap in a junkyard or passing the years comfortably in someone else's garage.

When they entered the vehicle identification number in an online search, it returned the address of an owner. Despite two letters, they did not hear back.

A multi-state pursuit ensued.

The car popped up in Arizona, Pennsylvania and New York. Then the Youngers heard from an owner in Maine, who said the car had recently been transported to Canada.

After considering the services of a private investigator -- this car meant a lot to the family -- they tried another online search. The search result: 1965 Chevy Impala SS for sale, Montreal, Quebec.

They called the dealer, confirmed the VIN and bought it over the phone. The car was in great shape when it arrived on a truck.

But the best part was yet to come -- reuniting the car with their father. The reunion was documented by a camera crew from Chevrolet that posed as a crew shooting a documentary on three generations of family members.

Watch the Youngers' story and the emotional reunion below. It is part of a series of car stories to celebrate Chevy's 100th anniversary.
