4000+ Rubber Ducks Take to the Surf

Drop a fake duckie over Huntington Beach Pier, for a good cause.

Any mom would warn any kid against dropping things off of any pier.

And wisely so. The ocean inhabitants below don't want our human stuff mucking about in the waves. But if that thing will float back to shore, almost instantly, and it is made of rubber, not unlike the toys we humans take into the water, and it is all for a good cause, that is a different matter.

Duck-A-Thon is very different, in fact, in all the best ways. The annual Huntington Beach fundraiser is happening over the weekend of May 14-16 -- 2010 marks the 18th year -- and the crowning event, the big Duck Festival and the rubber ducks' race to shore, happens on Saturday, May 15 at 3 p.m.

Buy a duck, see your money go toward AltaMed's Huntington Beach Community Clinic, drop your duck off the pier, and then root your duck back to shore. If your little guy is in the first 50 back, you're leaving with something prize-y.

Bet your mom -- the same mom who might have wagged a finger about dropping stuff off piers -- will want to buy a duck, too. Tell her you can buy your duck online, if you like. The Baby "Space" Duck is especially cute.

Wine tasting, shopping, local bites, and other activities are part of the classic HB weekend.
