CHILI COOK-OFF: Five thousand ways -- though that's probably a conservative estimate -- to make chili. We like beans (controversial?)and a bushel of chili peppers ourselves. Here's hoping that the Beverly Hills Chili Cook-off, which takes place on Sunday, August 2nd at the Beverly Hills Farmers Market, will be mixing up your ideal batch. A dash of cinnamon works wonders, too.
HOLLYWOOD OUTDOOR CINEMA: The movie is "Ghostbusters" ("there is no Dana, only Zuul!"); the spot is a parking lot off Sunset. The scene: Very movie crowd-ish, meaning people who really love this flick, people who will dress up in their Murrayian or Aykroydian best, people who are greedy, greedy like Slimer is slimy, for prizes. Details here. Night: Saturday, August 1st.
CIRQUE DU SOLEIL AT THE GROVE: Everyone who has strolled by that grassy bit on the eastern end of The Grove has probably felt a hint of an urge to do a cartwheel there. We can't be alone in that. But, a wish fulfilled: people *will* be cartwheeling and/or tumbling there on Sunday, August 2nd, when Cirque du Soleil performers stop by the outdoor mall to perform. Noon-5PM
WEST THIRD STREET SIDEWALK SALE: Traveler's Bookcase. Joan's on Third. Trina Turk. Kiss My Bundt. So many interesting, browse-able nooks between Fairfax and La Cienega. Gifty, sweet, tasty. The merchants of this stroll-nice row are holding a weekend sidewalk sale, full of deals and things to munch on as you walk. Saturday, August 1st and Sunday, August 2nd
CALIFORNIA WORLD GUITAR SHOW: Whether you're still going over those first three notes of "Smoke on the Water" or you're some kind of prodigy who can flip off the radio mid-song and finish it on your Fender, this is your spot this weekend. Guitars, guitars, more guitars, guys and gals who love guitars, guitars. At Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, Saturday, August 1st and Sunday, August 2nd
