A two-mile closure of the eastbound Riverside (91) Freeway in Riverside Friday night will mean potentially long travel delays, city officials said, and motorists were urged to consider other options.
Between 12:01 a.m. and 6 a.m. Saturday, all eastbound lanes on the 91, as well as the carpool lane and fast-lane on the westbound side, will be shut down between Magnolia and Tyler avenues as crews install temporary bridge supports for the La Sierra Avenue overpass.
A full closure of the eastbound side will be necessary again Sunday morning, between 12:01 and 8 a.m., according to the Riverside Department of Public Works.
Officials said traffic will be detoured off the freeway, in a single lane, onto the La Sierra Avenue exit, where motorists will be routed back onto the freeway.
Drivers were advised to avoid the closures by taking city streets.
The $38 million La Sierra Avenue Interchange Replacement Project includes widening the overpass to six lanes, expanding on- and off-ramps, and constructing a new trestle for the adjacent railway.
It is expected to wrap up in the summer.
