A Doozy of a Do

WE ADMIT IT: We kind of want to take the Culver Hotel home and keep it. (Not sure what the neighbors might say, since the hotel would take up the better part of a block.) Our affection stems from many things, but we love that the Culver was writing the book on celebrity guests and high-spirited high jinks long before other hotels that claim to be star favorites were even built. The actors who played the Munchkins? Yeah. You know they stayed there during the filming of "The Wizard of Oz." You also know about the circular bed in the John Wayne suite? Uh huh. Now a bunch of Culver City enthusiasts will be gathering in the legendary inn to talk not only hotel history but Culver City history in general. And people, you know it is a doozy.

A DOOZY OF A DO: The Culver City Historical Society is raising a glass to the area's Prohibition-testing past and movie-y ways on Sunday, Sept. 18. You know the stories of Washington Boulevard, right? Hoo boy. Some wild times had back in the day. A donation of fifty dollars (at the door, or $45 in advance) is requested. We'd go flapper for this one. Or better yet, have your Cowardly Lion costume handy? Why not? We'd wear one, if we had one. It's all about the tail with the C.L., right? That tail makes the costume (and the bows in the hair after he arrives at Oz are pretty rockin', too).
