Animated Invite to a Dead Man's Ball

An annual tradition gets a colorful, cartoony dimension.

It's the same question that pops up every year around this time. Which way to go? Phone call, electronic invitation, or traditional paper?

How do you send out the call that you're having a Halloween party? Oh, we know some of you hire a clown to go to each of your friends' homes to sing the invitation. Show-offs. We're not talking about you or your clown.

We're talking about the bulk of people who send out invitations in all the usual ways. And we're not poking holes in those usual ways; they work. But what if you were to make a little movie? Film as invitation? Wouldn't that wow your crowd?

That's what the Los Angeles County Museum of Art has done for its annual Muse Costume Ball, which is happening on Saturday, Oct. 29. The "Dead Man's Ball" short is animated and full of elegant, creepy flavor; skeletons and ghoulies are partying the night away. Tagline? "LACMA invites you to a funeral -- yours!" The animator is Tahnee Gehm and the composer is Johann Carbajal. Fine work they have done.

Now we're inspired to announced every social engagement we host via a brief and zippy animated film.

Special note: This ball typically sells out. Don't be a disappointed little ghostie. A general ticket is $100.
