Big Cats Return to Lion Camp

MAJOR MOVE: What were you doing on Friday, July 1? A lot of people were loading the back of the wagon with oars and pool wear and such, the better to head out from home and make the most of the long holiday weekend. But Izu, Mina, and Oshana were heading home, a place they hadn't seen in a few months. That home is Lions Camp -- Izu, Mina, and Oshana are big cats -- and it is located at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Since the majestic denizens departed in March, several renovations have gone down around Lion Camp, including the addition of medjool palms and fever trees (the zoo notes that these "can serve as scratching posts"; guess a big cat needs a big post). There are also new area for sunning and lolling, like elevated rocks and fresh grass.

ALSO ON NOW: In addition to being able to check out the redone Lion Camp digs, visitors to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park can enjoy the Summer Safari African Extravaganza, which is on now through Aug. 21, 2011. A visit to Lion Camp can be followed by a stop-by the activities area or the drumming station at the Safari Base Camp.
