We may have just found the world's largest trash compactor! Better yet, it runs by solar power!
O.K. this isn't exactly for your home -- but it could save energy in several ways.
The city of Santa Monica recently installed a new BigBelly trash container near Main Street and Ashland. No more overflowing trash bins here.
The solar powered trash compactors have a sensor to indicate when enough garbage has been put inside before turning on automatically.
The city says the BigBelly will hopefully cut down on the number of times workers need to collect trash and of course, fewer trash pickups can save gasoline, too.
The compactors collect their power through solar panels placed on top of the bin.
Other local cities are looking at the BigBelly's, too.
Stay tuned -- one could be coming soon to a corner near you.
