NBC4 LA Supports the 2011 Braille Challenge

Patrick Healy to present the NBC4 LA Superstar Award for Excellence in Reading

NBC4 LA is proud to support the 2011 Braille Challenge, taking place on June 25, 2011 at the Braille Institute in Los Angeles.

The winners of the competition will receive awards at a dinner held at the Hilton Universal Hotel that evening. Patrick Healy will be presenting the NBC 4 LA Braille Superstar Award for Excellence in Reading Comprehension.

The Braille Challenge is a unique academic competition designed to promote braille literacy among blind and visually impaired students across the country. It is the only national academic competition in the country specifically designed to challenge and motivate blind students to continue their study of braille, which is essential to their future success.

The Braille Challenge began in 2000 as a regional competition for blind students in Southern California. Since then, the Challenge has evolved into a national event, bringing blind students from across the United States and Canada together to test their skills against the top braille readers in the nation.

The students are divided into five academic levels, based on their age and grade level, and compete in five braille categories—reading comprehension, proofreading, chart and graph reading, braille spelling and speed and accuracy. This year marks the 11th Anniversary of the National Braille Challenge.
