Broomball Brawl

Derby Dolls. LA Flag Football League. Aaand go!

The Derby Dolls really can do no wrong. Give 'em a banked track and they'll spin around it at top speed, blazing past foes with cheek and style. Give 'em a broom and some ice and they'll slide toward the goal without a care to be seen.

And give 'em an important cause to raise money for and they are out in force and ready to rumble.

They broomballed against the Los Angeles Fire Department for a couple of years at Downtown on Ice, and now the Dolls are set to take on the LA Flag Footballers, "LA's gay-oriented flag football team." (Let's also pause to give props to LA Flag Football, which notably raises funds for various causes, too.)

So when LA Flag Football and the Derby Dolls unite to do good, as they're doing on Tuesday, Jan. 10? It's like a meeting of the community-minded, athletic-cool titans. It'll be quite the fierce, fun-filled broomball game, and it'll be free to spectators, too. If you're near downtown on Jan. 10, get to Pershing Square; the match is at 7 p.m.

The beneficiary is AIDS Project Los Angeles.

Now. Broomball. If you've played it you know, despite the humble tennies that participants wear, and the household brooms they wield, it is quite the game of skill (let's also mention that the all-important helmets are involved, too).

After all, tennies on ice? While you're following a ball and avoiding your opponents? Definitely not as easy as it looks. Wait. It doesn't even look easy, which is one more reason to go cheer on the match. Big thrills, two great teams, an important cause, and one of the final to-dos at Downtown on Ice before it shutters for another year.
