Calif. Paraglider Learns Flying is Best Left for Birds

Woman seriously hurt in crash near Big Sur

A 41-year-old woman was seriously injured in a paragliding accident Sunday in the Los Padres National Forest in southern Monterey County, a sheriff's office sergeant said.

The woman launched herself from Partington Ridge, about 20 to 30  miles southeast of the Big Sur area, and crashed into a tree about 100 yards below the ridge, said sheriff's Sgt. Dennis English.

It appeared as though she was attempting to reach nearby Sand Dollar Beach, but that she "didn't get enough lift," English said.

Multiple aircraft were sent to the area and the U.S. Forest Service, Big Sur Volunteer Fire Brigade and California Highway Patrol assisted in the rescue effort.

English said the woman suffered serious injuries, possibly a broken pelvis, and was flown to the hospital for treatment.
