Ceviche and Strudel by the Sea

Taste in San Pedro is on at Point Fermin Park.

In a city that rolls out a mid-to-major food festival every week or two, Taste in San Pedro, which is going down from Friday, Aug. 6 through Sunday, Aug. 8, is always an easy one to remember.

One, it is located in pretty Point Fermin Park, an ocean-breezy stretch that lends a soft salt-air-y quality to the proceedings. Two, it is Taste "in" San Pedro, not "of," as with most fests. The sound of it just makes it feel more casual and insidery. And three, the 22-year-old food fest used to be called the "Pig-a-Thon," which is still an apt and adorable name.

After all, local restaurant after local food shop makes for Point Fermin, where they then whip up chowders and short rib sandwiches and all sorts of funnel-y cake items. Plus there is beer and other bevs. The 2010 line-up includes 7th Street Chop House, Mishi's Strudel Bakery & Cafe, and McQ's Smoke House.

Music is part of the weekend, too. In any other year we'd say this is a wear-your-tank-and-tan-your-shoulders type of deal, but, given that highs will be in the upper 60s, and the Pacific is indeed right there, maybe a sweatshirt in the trunk is in order. One you can get a bit of barbecue sauce on.
