Chalk Art: Ventura Street Painting Festival

Make for the waterfront for a look-down, look-around day of on-the-sidewalk wonders.

Ventura Art & Street Painting Festival

FINDING THAT QUINTESSENTIAL SUMMER GOODBYE... is as individual a task as how you greet the season. Perhaps you take one more dip in a friend's pool, or you host one more barbecue, or you vow to visit the beach before autumn makes its entrance. Adding an art-nice alfresco happening to the summer farewell tour is always a lovely idea, too, if you rather like being outside, near the ocean, and seeing imaginative, just-created pieces for free. Such a happening is due for summer's penultimate weekend — that's Saturday, Sept. 10 and Sunday, Sept. 11 — in Ventura. In fact, the Ventura Art & Street Painting Festival is "Ventura's only street painting festival," and it is a fundraiser, too. FOOD Share, the regional food bank of the area, is the weekend's beneficiary, and there are squares to sponsor, should you want to support the organization (squares which will become artworks over the two-day stretch). Some...

40 ARTISTS... will be on the ground, with boxes of chalk at the ready, while other artisans will sell jewelry, pottery, and more nearby. Also nearby? The Pacific Ocean, which ups the breezy, stroll-around feel of the event (Ventura Harbor Village is the location). California sees a few madonnari weekends over the year, with Santa Barbara, Pasadena, and San Rafael arriving earlier in the summer. Should chalk art be your thing, and you want to take in another display before colder days, and rainier days, hold sway, put this later-on-the-calendar to-do on your own calendar. Salty breezes, harbor-close shops, cool chalky pictures at your feet, and a very nice cause lend the 8th annual outing of this gaze-down doing panache.
